Teaching children between the ages of 3 to 6 year is a great way to prepare them for elementary school. It is often the case that children who have a good knowledge base when they enter elementary school do much better than those who don't.
How to teach children who are between the ages of 3 to 6 years?
Time - It is a myth that children have such a low attention span that they cannot stay focused for more than fifteen minutes at a time. It is not necessary to keep the lessons as short as possible. Children can cope with 45-60 minute periods. It is necessary to change the activity every fifteen minutes to hold their interest however and this can be done easily using a combination of speaking, reading, writing and drawing activities.
Imagination - It is important to use your imagination and creativity when teaching young children. Sit with the material you plan on teaching the child and think of ways you can bring it alive and make it interesting. There are many ways to create fun games and adapt games to suit the material that you wish to teach. Once you get the hang of coming up with new ideas and unlock your imagination you'll be amazed at how easy it is.
Recycle - It is important that you repeat frequently what you have taught. Children remember things quickly but they also forget quickly too if they do not practice what they have learnt and use it often.
Enthusiasm - Kids respond well to enthusiastic teachers. Make your voice, actions and responses large. Speak up and use big facial expressions.
Encouragement - Children love rewards and positive feedback. If a child is doing well let them know. Create a reward system to motivate them.
Interaction - It is important that the child is involved in the learning process. Make sure they are following and responding to you. If you are doing a reading exercise they need to follow with their fingers. They need to have the opportunity to speak, so give them plenty of opportunity to ask and answer questions.
